We are striving to improve medical treatment and care for sick children coming to Haydom Hospital, in Tansania.

Our work focuses especially on children beeing born with birth defects like Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. With training both parents and medical staff, we are helping children in need to survive, providing early treatment, medical and mobility equipment and follow up care to allow them to grow up socially accepted. Together with the local team we are creating awareness in the communities in order to prevent the disease and detect it an early stage so it can be treated successfully. We are empowering and supporting parents to be the embassadors of their children so they are no longer hidden excluded from society and community.

With our main goal of Building capacity we are helping to develop and strengthen local strategies to improve medical care of kids beeing born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Haydom-Friends was started as an initiative to provide medical equipment to the local children´s department of Haydom Lutheran Hospital. The first visit to Haydom and its patients took place in 2009 where there was almost no infrastructure available for children admitted with special conditions like Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Before leaving Germany to start working in Tansania Founder Dr. Harbauer has visited Haydom several times before and knew about what was needed the most to improve medical care of children admitted to the hospital. Over the years and with the help and cooperation of local staff and other partners it was possible to initiate a special program to provide treatment and sustainable follow up care of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus patients in Haydom.

Today we have helped far more than 200 children with primary surgery followed by further training and medical care by the local team and we are facing a rapidly rising number of patients seeking for help.

Treating children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus successfully requires Team Work. We are thankful for our fruitful cooperation with the local staff and team of Haydom Hospital as well as for the support of our partners worldwide. With your donation we have been able to reach far and set the first milestones towards improving survival and medical treatment of Haydoms kids with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. We are striving to focus on strengthening local capacities and strategies to be able to supply sustainable and long term care for kids coming to Haydom and seeking medical help. To reach our budget goals we are initiating donation calls through certain activities that include both donors and local staff.

We want to bring everybody on board of our ship: Patient, Parents, Doctors, Staff and Donors. We want to make you feel belong to the team in order to make a change. We are a non profit organisation and every Euro donated is directly spent for the purpose of improving medical care for children seeking help at Haydom Hospital .

Haydom Hospital is a Missionary Hospital and every patient with our without income will find medical help immediatly. Haydom-Friends provides help to the smallest patients in need that cannot afford to be treated elsewhere.

We are encouring and supporting families to apply and receive Health insurance cards for their children after they are born, Haydom-Friend is offering to cover costs for Health Insurance for a child with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and at least 1 or 2 additional children in the family.

That ensures that the family will find treatment not only in the hospital but also in the local Health care centres for each and every condition and will help families to seek for medical help early and not to wait until the condition has worsened and become life threatening.
